It is always great to hear other swimsuit horror stories. All of us I think have experienced the “swim over” or pummeling. The good news is that he next time you are ready for it and won’t panic. Be well and here is to smooth water…

Informative and hilarious post! Good to know what to prepare for when I do my first triathlon. Gotta get over my slight fear of open water first. Swimming in a giant “M”. Classic. I’m sure I would have done the same!

I did my first triathlon in Caseville, Michigan last year. The wetsuit seemed great during my swim training, but I failed to take into account one major factor on the day of the race… there were 100 others swimming (read beating, pummeling, splashing, near drowning) all around me! At one point I was swam OVER by the lead element of the Women’s heat! I panicked. My wet suit was suddenly choking me. I felt like I was sinking! I was able to loosen my collar by pulling the zip half way down. VERY bad idea. Cold water rushed in. The remainder of the swim was slow, soggy and sluggish. I was never more happy than to feel sand between my toes. I’ll be doing the sprint in Caseville this year. Only my second tri. A little wiser I hope.
